Yipee for Music!
I am so thrilled to have finally adopted a violen or fiddle..which is it? Thanks to an artist friend of mine, I now kinda own this beautiful musical instrument. I say kinda because once I finished dressing her with glass and paint she will go back to her "owner" at Smiley's Acoustic Cafe in Greenville, SC. "Fiddledee" I will call her (at least for now) was a part of a group of violens that were donated to artists to paint or "dress up" and then return to Smiley's. Long story longer---I will give her back too. sniff sniff. But she will shine in her new digs. I cannot wait to see how she will look. Stay tuned!!

Something old, something new, something borrowed, something-

In the coming months you will be seeing more artwork done with mixed media from me. This portrait was created using a pulled art technique used from Mystele who's artwork is so unique and impressive, and Suzi Blu's online classes whom I can say the same for --(their information is invaluable.Totally two different artists but whom I have such a fondness for. Oh, I had better mention Julia Peters who never ceases to amaze me.
As a mosaic artist I love texture, so it seems that with everything I create has texture-as you see in this piece. You will see more of her maybe in the future because I will be adding more elements to her...or maybe not.
Have a great weekend!

What was your kick in the butt?

I am curious-is there a book that seemed to "change your life"? When I was around 25/26 - (eeewwww that's about 25 years ago or more...eeeeek!!)My cousin Debby came me this book to read. I had never been one to read inspiration books or say "churchie" books but, I thought I would try this. It did change my life and the way I thought about things. I needed that at this time in my life. Dr. Peale was an amazing person and I suppose one of the first of many postive speakers. You may know someone that could use this book. Do you have a reading that "changed your life"? I am interested in hearing from you!

Teal Mosaic Mirror

Do you remember this mirror? Waaaaayyy back a few weeks ago I start this teal mosaic mirror. I had to put it to the side because of several events, such as moving into the new studio building, First Friday, laziness, and too hot or too cold. I have now basically finished it and ...as usual it doesn't look anything like what it started to be-and I am glad! I just could not look at that pattern any longer. Now, I really like the way it turned out. I am going to add some metal lettering I think, but before I did I wanted to share. What do you think?
The materials are vitreous tiles. Approx. measurements are 12"w x 24"h w

Creation of a Mosaic Mirror...

Ok now I have to seal the wood-I use black paint because it was the closet to me. I decided on design 2 as you can see. It just felt right. As you can tell, I am pretty easy and have found to follow my intuition. That could turn out really scarey though. YiKeS! For some unknown reason I cannot design a piece with bright bold Matisse colors!..It is very annoying to me. I love fun funky stuff, but can't bring that all together. You know, the folky stuff. I am just about to give up on even trying. Oh well, I am off to draw and color now. Oh the time it took me to do all of the stuff above was about 3 hours. So right now that is about 3.5 hours into the project.

The Creation of a Decorative Mosaic Mirror

I was reading one of my favorite mosaic artist's blog yesterday (Barbara Keith). Barbara was explaining the stages of a mosaic piece and how long each stage takes. I loved her idea of sharing this and thought I would do the same. Thanks Barbara for the idea!
The first part is rather slow, it involves deciding what to do with what you've got. Since most of my work is by commission only or by client I don't keep a lot of substrates to use. I did find a Gothic shaped mirror and pulled it out from hiding. I knew right off what colors I wanted (kinda) I looked in my stash and saw these beautiful tiles that Beth Norton from TigerLily Treasures had made for me. That would be my jumping point. From this point I started searching for other colors to coordinate. I don't know how I find anything in my studio, it's really really messy right now. So my time for this was about 30 minutes. Not bad! This will be a fun project without worry if someone will like it. I love the color choice too. I will try to post my progress tomorrow.

"Get Ready," an aquatint print by Mary Lee Bendolph of Gee’s Bend, Ala.Photo courtesy of Tinwood Media
The women of Gee's Bend
Quilts and artwork from a collective of rural African-American women will be displayed at the Schneider Museum
By Katherine Hannon
for the Mail Tribune
July 10, 2009 6:00 AM
"I remember when I was 6 and I tried to do my first Nine Patch. I didn't know what I was doing," recalls Mary Ann Pettway, 52. "I was just trying to be like Mama. That's when I started learning how to make quilts. We didn't have any beds to sleep on. We used quilts on the floor, four or five layers."
Pettway was one of seven Alabama women in Ashland on July 4 for the opening of "Visual Jazz," quilts and works on paper by the women of Gee's Bend, on exhibit through Sept. 14 at the Schneider Museum of Art on the Southern Oregon University campus. The women are members of a collective of rural African-American quilt makers who show their work in museums around the country.
The quilts of Gee's Bend are easy to appreciate, with their bright bands of color vibrating with an exuberance that can't be contained. Appreciation increases, however, when you understand that this exuberance grew from the poorest, least hopeful of places.
A sharp turn in the Alabama River all but surrounds the small peninsula of Gee's Bend. Most of the 700 residents are direct descendants of the slaves who worked on the Pettway plantation, and many still have the Pettway name. After emancipation, they stayed on as sharecroppers and tenant farmers, living a life decades behind the rest of the country.
"We quilted by kerosene until the 1960s and toted water until the '70s," explains China Pettway, 57.
Their geographic and cultural isolation allowed a unique multi-generational art form to develop. Likened to the works of Henri Matisse and Paul Klee, and hailed by the New York Times as "miraculous works of modern art," the quilts of Gee's Bend are acclaimed for their honesty, ingenuity and spirit.
Despite their success, the women of Gee's Bend still make quilts the way they always have.
"We make what we want to make, not what the world expects from a quilt," says Loretta Bennett, 48.
For generations, their design choices were dictated by poverty. Using worn cloth and work clothes, "old shirtsleeves, britches and dress tailings ... every little good spot you could find," says Nettie Young, 92, in a documentary interview, they played with placement and patterns until, out of necessity, beauty emerged.
The quilts of Gee's Bend shine with the spirit of women who are larger than their limitations. They are a celebration of innovation in the face of deprivation, a testament to creativity unfettered by life.
Today, Gee's Bend quilts and prints hang alongside the works of well-known artists. When asked whether they feel like artists, the women of Gee's Bend answer with a long, drawn-out "noooo."
"But," admits Louisiana Bendolph, 48, "when I go to our exhibits and see our quilts on the wall, I realize I'm part of something bigger. I'm learning how to use that word 'pride,' to know that some things I do are worthy of being proud."
Bennett agrees. "I'm beginning to learn. I saw a quote, 'Art is not what you see, but what you make others see.'
"I'm starting to learn that."

Designer Spotlight: Jane Coslick

I love this kitchen with the beautiful tile backsplash. I dig it!. Designer Jane Coslick knows how to sooth a southern summer. Don't you love her colors.
I personally love the colors but have a very hard time creating with them. Why? I just don't know. I want to--I really want to! I have even separated my tiles into those colors and bought the paints, but still haven't pulled it off like I want. PATIENTS! I tell myself. I guess you will have to stay tuned to see if I can create the "fresh" look. Any advice? While I have your attention, I like to share another thought with you. I am looking to start a series of paintings and mosaics...maybe on the smaller side. I'll talk about it more soon. Thanks for listening to my rambles.

Hummm?
Well I have know grouted, painted, and painted the edges...many colors, but ended up with green. I think I kinda like it. I will live with it a couple of days and decide. I like bright colors so it's hard for me to settle for forest green. What do you think? These little pieces turn out so pretty I. Acually it's one of the projects we do in my mosaic signage class. I provide a metal frame though...and all the other supplies.I still have to clean up around the frame, it's a little too rustic! Once that is done I guess she will be ready to go.
4/13/09
Now we go to the next Step...
Grouting is my least favorite part of mosaic. Your grout powder will need to be mixed to a peanut butter consistency. I add small amounts of water in a tub and stir to achieve this. I then let it set for a few minutes until it slakes or rather has a slight film on top. Little by little I add the grout to the mosaic...always to remember to wear goggles, and gloves. The grout just ruins your hands. Now after applying the grout I wipe and wipe, and wipe, and wipe, and wipe. Then I wipe a little more until I like the look. Here I am using white newspaper to clean, some people use lint free cloths. This is a very short description of thisprocess. You can learn more in my mosaic workshop.
Ta Da! It's grouted but I'm not diggin the white grout. Now what. Guess I will have to experiment. Hummm, I think I will be naughty and try paint. The unthinkable to some. I will be back with more photos on this tomorrow.

The Making of a Mosaic

St. Thomas Catholic Church, Zanesville, OH
Ever wonder what is involved in the making of a mosaic?
Well now you "sort of know" This was a project that was so much fun. It's so nice when you get to work with great people. I live in South Carolina and the project home was in Ohio. I created the work in my home studio on nylon mesh. Each piece of glass is handcut with mosaic nippers, well actually I used wire cutters on these. Upon completion, I cut the project into puzzle pieces, pack, map it out, and send it to the new owners. A professional tile setter will then set the new artwork. Then I smile really, really big! Mosaic artwork outlives a lifetime...why not enjoy it now.

Greenville Tech Charter High School 2009
For the third year in a row, I have been delighted to be a guest artist at Greenville Charter High School, for their Arts Intersession. I can't tell you how much fun this is to be with the teenagers for 4 days and introduce them to the wonderful art of mosaic. We worked with glass tile (vitreous) and created great signs of their choice. Then our second project was a paper mosaic, which they as a group created a 2 feet x 1 foot panel for hanging. It seems like each group get better as the years go on. So much fun! Great group of kids too. I can't wait until next year. Thanks too to Mrs Gay for helping me. Mrs. Gay you are my hero.

This is a technique using the value system instead of natural colors. Quiet an abstract look but oh so fun. Portraits do not always have to be exact, it really makes it more interesting to use mosaics for texture and feel to the subject. What a great gift for someone!
